Since childhood I’ve had an interest in both art and science. I studied biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, but found I was spending most of my time with a newly purchased Hi-8 video camera and video switcher. After two years at UCSC I changed majors and enrolled at Ohio University, where my father was a mathematics professor. At OU I studied video production and photography and have incorporated my love of art with science and technology ever since.
Not long after graduating from OU I was fortunate to start as an online editor using a Sony switcher and edit controller. This trained me on broadcast standards and how to use a waveform monitor and vectorscope. The online process required a great deal of thought and precision, and the skills I developed then proved to be invaluable throughout my career.
Over the years I’ve worked at production houses where it was necessary to wear many hats. In addition to editing, videography, color grading and motion graphics, I’ve been in charge of lighting, audio, equipment purchasing and upkeep, database management, IT and media backup. I’ve also served as a producer, director and scriptwriter.
I’ve worked on long and short-form advertising, direct response videos and infomercials, dramatic pieces and half-hour television shows. I have experience with technical, training and safety videos (including government compliance videos for major railroads), and political pieces.
I specialize in taking complicated subject matter and presenting it in an entertaining and easy to understand way. I also like interviewing people and telling their stories. One of my favorite projects was shooting and editing a documentary about railroad industry leader R.J. Corman. I wove together more than 30 interviews to tell the life story of this interesting man. I developed a unique organization technique for the hundreds of hours of footage to create a cohesive 40 minute narrative.
I have extensive experience editing with Adobe Premiere, Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro, and have used Adobe After Effects for a decade to create motion graphics. I enjoy researching new software and new ways of doing things to create interesting and engaging looks, and to work in the most efficient and organized way possible. I’ve developed a completely remapped keyboard shortcut system that allows me to edit at blazing speeds and to switch seamlessly from one platform to another.
I’m well versed with industry standard digital workflows and file compression techniques and utilize color grading software to enhance footage, sometimes creating custom LUTs. For still photography I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to manipulate the raw file for complete control of the image.
I am just as comfortable behind video and still cameras as I am in front of a computer, editing. I started my career shooting with large shoulder-mounted Betacam SP cameras and have shot on a variety of cameras since, including modern cinema cameras and DSLRs.
I enjoy collaborating on compelling and interesting projects that entertain and educate and am dedicated to creating work we can all, as a team, be proud of.
